作弹会2015

作弹会 2015

Singapore, 19 August 15 – More than 200 music enthusiasts lent their support to young composers at Ding Yi Music Company’s (DYMC) Composium 2015 Prize Presentation Concert in the Esplanade Recital Studio on 7 August. Guest-of-honour Minister Grace Fu honoured the event with her presence and presented the prizes to the winners.

Led by their conductor, Mr Quek Ling Kiong, the DYMC musicians premiered the winning pieces of the composition competition. Composers Li Chenyao, 23, and Song Yang, 30, were the winners of Category A (works for ensembles of 10 to 13 musicians) and Category B (works for five-musician ensembles) respectively, receiving SGD$2000 in prize money and the opportunity to be composers-in-residence for DYMC.

Audience members were invited to to vote for their favourite piece during the concert itself. Local composer, 25-year old Liew Kong Meng, emerged the crowd favourite, taking home the Audience’s Choice Award in addition to the Young Singaporean Composer Award and SG50 Award. His piece “ Watching Time” was described by concert attendees as simple but emotional, evoking a sense of nostalgia.

The concert was the highlight of the three-day event, which included open rehearsals, symposiums and a workshop. The symposiums were well-received, with enthuasiasts seizing the rare opportunity to hear music luminaries lecture on Chinese chamber music. Speakers included members of the adjudicator panel: Dr Chen Yi, Mr Pan Hwang-Long and Professor Liu Xi Jin, in addition to renowned Singaporean composer Dr Chen Zhangyi, Dr Eugene Dairianathan, Mr Choo Thiam Siew and Dr Tony Makarome and Dr Tim O’Dwyer. In particular, Dr Chen Yi’s composition workshop had a full house, with many music students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts eager to hear the renowned composer discuss and conduct live demonstrations of her work “Chinese Fables”.

Through events like Composium, DYMC takes the lead in adding to the local repository of quality Chinese chamber music pieces and hopes to cultivate greater interest and awareness of Chinese chamber music in Singapore.
