Introduction to Traditional Chinese Woodwind Instruments

Multi-award winning woodwind instrumentalists Dedric Wong and Tan Qing Lun will share the must-knows of traditional Chinese woodwind instruments in this talk. Through lively demonstrations, the audience will learn the unique sounds of the dizi, xiao, sheng and suona. Audience will also have the chance to try out simple techniques on the ladi. No prior knowledge required. This talk is conducted in English and is recommended for music lovers, those interested in Chinese culture and the curious.

To welcome the New Year and new identity, Ding Yi Music Company will be staging a concert, “Sounds of Winds” at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts Lee Foundation Theatre. Tickets are $20 and available through SISTIC.

 

In this concert, Ding Yi Music Company has invited four renowned Chinese Woodwind Soloist to share the stage. They are: “The First Man of Guanzi”, Professor Hu Zhi Hou from Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing); Sheng and Dizi Maestro Professor Xu Chao Ming and Professor Zhan Yong Ming from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; “Golden Suona” Hou Yan Qiu from China Conservatory of Music. Worth mentioning is that these four are not only lauded for their virtuosity, but also their contributions in the research and development of their instruments.

 

Ding Yi Music Company’s Music Director , Singapore Cultural Medallion Tay Teow Kiat will conduct the ensemble for the first time as they accompany the Guest Soloist on their masterpieces. Let Ding Yi Music Company’s brilliant performances usher you into the New Year!

Ding Yi Music Company presents a concert series in collaboration with the Arts House showcasing a delightful fusion of music and fashion of the seasons.

 

Set against the backdrop of the fashion pieces by local budding designer Melody Chong Mei Yuin, the concert aims to encourage audiences to open up their hearts and minds to the versatility of the Dizi, Erhu, Pipa and Voice in an intimate setting. A diverse repertory of folk, western classical and contemporary music specially arranged for the unique instrumentation will be featured at the concert. This June, enthrall your senses, as you journey through with familiar favourites such as Springtime Polka, It Might as Well be Spring, Summertime and Summer Nights.

This Recital features compositions by distinguished composer Professor Wang Jian Ming who currently heads the Chinese Folk Music Department in Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

 

Be captivated by Professor Wangs exciting and exquisite Erhu rhapsodies and Guzheng solos performed by Ding Yi Music Company's very own multi-award winning Erhu and Guzheng Performers.

 

Erhu Performer - Lecturer Wang Ying, From the Central Conservatory of Music and Guzheng Performer - Madam Yin Qun, 1989 First Prize winner of the China Shan Chen Cup in Chinese Musical Instrumental Category joins Ding Yi Music Company for this spectacular performances of Professor Wang's Compositions. Coupled with Professor Wang's newly specially composed World Premiered pieces for the ensemble , this is a concert not to be missed !

Singapore Chinese Orchestra Concert Hall (SCH)

Apart from performing famous works associated with their respective instruments, Chinese classical music lovers in Singapore are in for a treat as the four virtuosos perform together in an arrangement of the ancient folk tune Three Variations on the Plum Blossom Theme. Additionally, they will be sharing interesting anecdotes about their lives and approaches to their art. The night of dazzling performances will be accompanied by the musicians of Ding Yi Music Company and includes short interviews conducted in Mandarian and English. The concert will be conducted by Dr Tay Teow Kiat.
