NAFA Lee Foundation Theatre

Ding Yi Music Company is once again invited to collaborate with Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts to present a night of Chinese chamber music. This concert is artistically directed by Ms Lan Wei Wei, a pipa soloist, Chinese chamber musician and lecturer at the China Central Conservatory of Music.

 

Evolution of Traditions premieres many Chinese chamber works written by famous composers such as Guo Wen Jing's "Quivering Stars and Night Breeze in the Mountains" and "Zen Thoughts" by Chow Jun Yi, a winner of the Composium 2012. Comprising early to recent chamber works, the audience will get to listen to the evolution of music and understand its influence through this captivating concert.

Exploring the captivating world of Chinese classical music with the melodious sounds of the Erhu-the most famous bowed string instrument in the Huqin family.

 

Join our acting concertmaster Chin Yen Choong and Erhu principal Lim Kwuan Boon in discovering the magic of the Erhu and its development over the years. Learn its history while Yen Choong and Kwuan Boon demonstrates different styles and techniques as well as the widely varied repertoire of this fascinating instrument.

Virtuosos of Chinese Music

Following the great success of the "Great Masters of Chinese Music" in 2012, Ding Yi Music Company is proud to present and evening full of famous repertoire and exquisite classics with the highly-anticipated "Virtuosos of Chinese Music". 

Dizi Virtuoso Wang Ci Heng will be showcasing his “Love of Eagle”. Wang Zhong Shan, Guzheng virtuoso will be staging the popular Peking Opera- "The Deep Night Thoughts” and “Robe of Clouds ” on the Guzheng. In addition, catch Erhu virtuoso Yu Hong Mei's elegance as she presents pieces such as "A Flower" and "Tune of Henan" with the ensemble. 

Rounding off this magnificent performance, all three virtuosos will join hands in presenting "Charms of Jiang Nan" with the chamber ensemble.

Catch Derek Koh, Lim Kwuan Boon and Yvonne Tay, as they take centre stage in this joint soloist recital, "Protégés of Brillance". 

Watch and listen, as they showcase their immense aptitude and virtuosity on the Yangqin, Erhu and Guzheng. The multi award-winning young musicians of Ding Yi Music Company will present an evening of music with works ranging from “Falling Flowers. Night”, to the popular “The Carmen Fantasy”, “Song of Elegance” and the chamber piece “Emotions, Rain”.

Ding Yi Music Company returns to F.Y.I for the fourth time with a musical journey across the universe, from the sun and moon to the stars and the Earth. Animations inspired by Chinese mythology about Hou Yi and Change will accompany the four movements. 

This educational performance, set against a backdrop of animated Chinese folklores, will introduce pupils to traditional Chinese music through a comparison between Chinese and Western percussion instruments.

This concert will feature world‐class composers such as Tan Dun, Zhou Long, Chen Yi, Chen Qi Gang, Ye Xiao Gang and Guo Wen Jing all of whom coincidentally graduated from the 1978 class of the China Central Conservatory of Music. 


Under the baton of Maestro Lim Yau, Ding Yi Music Company will present various chamber music works by these composers. This will include the world-acclaimed “Ghost Opera” by Tan Dun with the pipa solo by Chua Yew Kok. Other works include Chen Qi Gang’s Oboe with chamber ensemble “Extase” with Veda Lim on the Oboe, and Chen Yi’s “Huqin Suit” to be locally premiered by our acting concertmaster Chin Yen Choong. 

A concert filled with many premieres of majestic chamber works of the century, this is an event not to be missed!

Folk songs are part of the invaluable cultural heritage of a nation. From labour chants to love ditties, operatic tunes, and even songs sung in the mountains and fields, the folk music of Northern Shaanxi is known for its resonant, hearty, bold and unconstrained qualities. Often composed of beautiful lyrics that convey emotional depth, the songs express the spirit, thoughts and feelings of its people. Northern Shaanxi folk music dates back seven millennia; it was developed and nurtured by the Shaanxi people and remains, to this day, deeply rooted in their lives. 

 

Be transported to the rich plains of Shaanxi in a captivating evening of Northern Shaanxi folk songs with rising star Wang Er Ni. Lose yourself in her emotive vocal renditions as the Shaanxi native performs familiar folk tunes such as Going to the West Gate, Red Lilies Crimson and Bright, accompanied by Ding Yi Music Company with conductor Dr Tay Teow Kiat.

The Asian Composers League is the most vibrant and active contemporary music organization in the Asia-Pacific region today. It was established in 1973 by leading composers from the region.

 

Its primary objectives are:

To promote, preserve, and develop the musical cultures of the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in the field of music composition; and To further interests of composers in the Asia-Pacific region through representation and negotiation, and to achieve recognition of their rights in national and international law.


The Conference and Festival are magnificent events which are held annually and biennially, hosted by the member countries under the auspices of the ACL. It is an important venue for promising Asian-Pacific composers with different cultural backgrounds to present their works, exchange ideas and build solidarity amongst themselves.

Inspired by the Song Dynasty painting, Along the River During the Qing Ming Festival 「清明上河图」, A Prince's Journey is a heartwarming tale about passion and courage, told through an entertaining animated film accompanied by stirring Chinese music.

 

A young prince dislikes having to practise hispipa all day long and escapes from the palace in search of freedom. Little does his know, his adventure will bring him back to the palace with a new passion for the things he has taken for granted all his life.

 

Join the prince on his journey of discovery and enjoy the beauty of Chinese music in this fun and interactive performance.

Ding Yi Music Company proudly presents the inaugural International Chinese Chamber Music Festival 2013, a festival aiming to increase awareness and appreciation of Chinese chamber music in Singapore and around the world through a series of concerts, fringe performances, workshops and exhibitions.

 

The term “Chamber music” originated from the western music world; Chinese chamber music is a very new term which might be unfamiliar to the public. Led by well-knowned conductor Quek Ling Kiong, it is hoped that the festival will draw more attention towards this genre of music, whereby composers, musicians, and audiences would gain a deeper understanding about Chinese chamber music and work together in shaping the definition of this genre of music.

 

Catch the impressive ensembles from around the region together with Ding Yi Music Company in 3 days of concerts!
