East Meets West

To end off our 2012 season on a special note, Ding Yi Music Company will be collaborating with Singapore leading chamber group, I-Sis Trio. I-Sis Trio- Cello, Harp, and Violin, 3 outstanding beautiful musicians, they going to take the stage showcasing unique blend of Western and Eastern chamber works. A refreshing merge of a Western and Eastern Chamber ensemble, and exchanging each of their brilliant repertoires and creating a new blend of sonority and sentiments to the Chinese music scene.

Bearing a title that plays on the Chinese idiom 《诗情画意》,this concert presents an evening of poetry and painting performed by an award-winning Chinese traditional music ensemble, conducted by Youth Artist Awardee Quek Ling Kiong, with respected guest artists.

 

This four-part concert begins with诗 Poetry which explores poetry and music, with poetry recitation by MediaCorp Capital 95.8FM DJ Ong Teck Chon who will also host the event. Young Artist Award recipient pianist Lim Jing Jing who performs and teaches at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, will illuminate 琴 Strings, blending the sound of the piano with that of Chinese traditional instruments. 画 Painting partners Ding Yi musicians with Young Artist Awardee visual artist Tay Bak Chiang. The concert culminates with 艺 Art, an experience which brings together poetry, piano and painting in a new commissioned piece written by Eric Watson, Senior Teaching Fellow at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Ding Yi Music Company’s arranger-in-residence Phang Kok Jun.

Poetic Charms

Enter into a dream world of Pipa sound and tone with Ding Yi Music Company’s ensemble soloist- Chua Yew Kok. Award winners of various competitions, he will be performing Pipa repertoires from traditional trio “The Buoyant Clouds” arranged by Gao Wei Jie to contemporary selections such as “As in Dream” composed by Chen Yi and "Anecdote Drawing" by Law Wing-Fai. A world premiere Pipa and Chamber ensemble piece named “Breaking Dawn” will be performed, composed by our very own Ding Yi Music Company’s resident arranger- Phang Kok Jun.

As in Dreams

Ding Yi Music Company(DYMC) invites all composers of any nationality or age to submit an original composition scored for the Chinese chamber music ensemble. 

 

As part of DYMC's upcoming Compositional Symposium, or Composium 2012, up to 6 finalists will be selected from a preliminary round and invited to Singapore on the 2nd and 3rd of June to interact with the musicians and adjudicators in an open rehearsal. This will then culminate in a prize presentation concert, where works of the finalists will be performed by the award-winning Ding Yi Chinese chamber ensemble.

The second concert of our 2012 Season, Ding Yi Music Company presents a special concert filled with nostalgia as the 4 Great Masters of the Chinese Music scene narrates their story of their musical journey through their repertoire!

 

Featuring Southern school Dizi master - Lu Chun Ling, Guqin Successor - Gong Yi, Erhu Master - Wang Guo Tong, Yueqin Poet - Feng Shao Xian, the concert will showcase their efforts in spearheading the development and popularization of these instruments. Not to be missed, this concert will also be the first concert the 4 great masters have performed on stage together.

TThe first concert after embarking on a new journey. Maestro Lim Yau will be conducting Ding Yi Music Company. This concert will conclude the "Plum Blossom Series", a six-year musical journey inspired by "The Three Adaptation of Plum Blossoms" of our resident composer - Jean Y. Foo. Maestro Lim Yau injects western sound texture and feel, as the Chinese chamber ensemble presents a different perspective to the audience. Joining the concert is celebrated Bass Virtuoso - Chen Ziping, Professor of Central Conservatory of Music (China).

Have you ever wondered what is the Ruan? Or how does the mysterious looking Pipa that appears in many Ancient Chinese films sound like? Then be present at Ding Yi Music Company's educational talk! In this 2hr session, participants will come up close and personal with traditional Chinese stringed instruments. Musicians from Ding Yi Music Company will also perform at this talk where beginners can learn about the history and evolution of traditional Chinese music; as well as identify the various plucked string instruments like the pipa, ruan and guzheng. This session will be conducted in English.
